Legal and Practical Concerns for Employers — One Employer's Approach to COVID-19

As leaders of a new company in the Alternative Legal Service Provider (“ALSP”) space, the news of a possible pandemic weighs heavily on our hearts and minds.  Each day brings more news of cases of people contracting the COVID-19 virus, which is spreading at a rapid rate.  The constant news flow has raised questions about business travel, meetings, interviews for new talent, and employees working from home, among other considerations.

Legal Innovators is a start-up company, so we are running hard adding new clients, raising capital and adding new talent to our business.  We cannot afford a significant business interruption.  However, what is of greater concern to us is the health of our team (both existing and future members), our clients, and the general public. 

We thought in this moment, we would lead from the heart and head, listen to the medical professionals, and be as innovative as possible to run our business while protecting our teammates.

Howard University School of Law celebrated its 150th anniversary by being consecutively ranked the number 1 law school for African American students [1].

The school’s motto of “Truth and Service”, its rich institutional history, and the notoriety of its distinguished alumni led one of our founders, Bryan Parker, to attend Howard’s Homecoming in the fall of 2019. Legal Innovators Ends 2019 With Day of Service, Underscoring it’s Commitment to the Community

In December we held our first Day of Service which was organized by Legal Innovators Law Clerks Elaine Chamberlain and Sarah Dorsey. Our junior legal professionals and the company's leadership team provided lunch to some of the 6,521 men, women, and children in need in the city of Washington, D.C. in partnership with SOME – So Others Might Eat. 

Elaine and Sarah chose SOME as our first community service partner, as the organization provides more than just food for those experiencing homelessness and poverty in D.C.  SOME offers hot showers, clothing, medical services, addiction recovery services, mental health services, and intensive job training and placement, as well as free or affordable housing. The organization uses food as a gateway to help thousands of people transform their lives to become productive and outstanding members of our community.
